Why a cop car?
Oh, if I had $27 every time someone asked me that, I'd never have to pay for a full tank of gas ever again. The answer is quite simple: it's not a cop car. Those vehicles you see with the blue flashing lights and "911" on the side, those are cop cars. When was the last time you saw a cop car with a moonroof?? Or leather interior? Yes, I have a black grille but I would positively love to be convinced that having a black grille makes me a police impersonator.
For further discussion: An impersonator takes on the role of that whom he is impersonating, in this case pulling people over or doing other police things. An impressionist gives the appearance of a person--in this case a cop--be it with pushbars or black steel wheels or black grilles. The important difference being, an impersonator is a criminal and an impressionist is harmless albeit sometimes intimidating to other drivers. There, now aren't you glad you asked?
Why a full-size sedan?
Well for one, it fits me. There's not very many cars that comfortably fit a 6'4" frame. In this car I don't even have to slide the driver's seat all the way back! I rarely use the back seat (I use it for groceries, mother) but otherwise it is very practical for my lifestyle. I don't need the utility of a truck and I don't need the space of a SUV. I also don't need a performance-oriented coupe (i.e. Firebird, Camaro) because I'll never use that much power.
Do you have the police engine in your car?
Yes, yes I do. So does every other Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis, and Lincoln Towncar. All the engines are the same, don't let anyone tell you any different. Oops I almost forgot, the police engine may have a higher speed limiter, so instead of 106mph top speed you get 129mph top speed. Which is really important for everyday driving (note sarcasm).
Do you have the Mustang engine in your car?
No, the Mustang GT engine has PI (performance improved) cylinder heads which add 25hp. However starting in 2001MY the stock Crown Victoria engine has the PI heads, giving it 235hp. It is possible for me to upgrade to PI heads, but at this point it is not worth the money to gain 25hp.
What is your 1/4mi time like?
Well, with a horrible reaction time of 1.069s, I was able to hit 16.399s @ 82.27mph. Hey what can I say it was my first drag ever. Times of 16.1-16.3 are typical for non-PI (PI="performance improved", see 2001) engines. See my timeslip.
Aren't you worried about your gas tank exploding?
That's ridiculous. The fires have only occurred in 70mph+ direct rear-end collisions, which are extremely rare and usually the result of a drunk driver. Almost any car would be prone to fire or other life-threatening forces under those circumstances. Also, while it is sad that ~12 police officers have died in Crown Vic rear end collisions since 1996, that number is statistically insignificant when you take into account that over 40,000 people died in car accidents in 2000 alone. The media has hyped these 12 deaths to the point where police departments are switching to Impalas and Intrepids, which--due to their inherently weak FWD unibody architecture--will have to be replaced in three or four years at the taxpayers' expense. Not to mention the fact that an unbelted officer is just as prone to death or serious injury when subjected to a 70mph+ rear end collision, fire or not! There are some very interesting facts and videos at www.cvpi.com for police and civilians alike.
I thought you were a General Motors guy?
I was a GM guy for a while, when all I could afford were 80's G-body cars (Bonneville, Cutlass Supreme) and trucks. I was raised on RWD and will probably drive RWD exclusively until they won't let me drive anymore. Now that I have owned two Crown Vics, I guess you could say I am a Ford guy. Although those new LX platform cars from Chrysler are VERY appealing...
If you had your choice of any new car under $35,000 what would you get?
Probably a Dodge Magnum R/T with a few nice options.
What other cars have you owned?
1999 Ford Crown Vic LX HPP (2001-2002) **wrecked 5-Dec-2002
1983 Olds Cutlass Supreme V6 (1998-2001) **sold
1988 Olds Cutlass Ciera (1997) **wrecked Nov-1997
1981 Chevy C10 Pickup (1996-1997) **sold
1987 GMC Caballero (1996) **wrecked Sept-1996
1981 Chrysler Cordoba (1995-1996) **sold
Not bad for someone who's only been driving for six years, eh?
I have an opinion and/or technical question about cars or engines... What do you think?
By all means, [email protected]ask me (remove nospam from the address). I am always willing to talk cars, it keeps me on my toes and I usually end up learning something in the process of getting back to you.
